Q: “What is the difference between formal and informal recruitment?”
A: Formal recruitment is hosted by the Tyler Panhellenic Association each year during the fall semester of an academic term. During formal recruitment all women looking to join or learn more about the sororities offered at UT Tyler participate in a week long recruitment consisting of three rounds; open house, philanthropy night and preference night. This is the traditional form of recruitment. Informal recruitment however is a time set aside by Panhellenic that allows the sororities to offers bids to women who meet the membership requirements and have expressed an interest in joining Delta Gamma. They are not required to attend other sorority events like formal requirement and typically the events hosted by the chapter will consist of dinners, meet and greets and also additional social gatherings. For the Fall 2008-2009 school year formal recruitment will be held September 8th-13th. All informal recruitment events for Delta Gamma will take place Aug. 27th- Sept. 6th.
Q: "How do I know if I should go through formal or informal recruitment?"
A: When deciding if you should participate in formal or informal recruitment it is strictly ones personal choice. When participating in formal recruitment a potential new member gets to experience and meet all the women from all three sororities on campus and is typically matched to receive a bid from at least one of the three sororities. During informal recruitment potential new members are invited to exclusive events hosted by the chapter and will only interact with the women from that sorority unless invited by multiple organizations on campus. Generally, in informal recruitment there are a limited number of spots available and the process may be more selective than formal recruitment. Regardless of which method you choose to go Greek, Delta Gamma encourages you to be familiar with the other organizations on campus and to make sure Delta gamma is right for you before joining our sisterhood. One important factor to keep in mind...In order to participate in informal recruitment you must have attended UT Tyler for one full academic semester. All new transfer & freshman for Fall 2008 are only eligible for formal recruitment.
Q: "If I would like to come to a informal event what do I need to do?"
A: If you would like to attend one of our informal recruitment events you may do so by contacting our Director of Continuous On-going Recruitment, Jennifer Staub. All potential members must attend at least two of the four events in order to be considered for membership. For the Fall 2008 semester we have four informal recruitment events planned for the semester beginning the first week of September. We would love to see you there! If you are interested in being a DG contact Jennifer by email at jenniferstaub@yahoo.com or if you know a DG just let her know you are interested.
Q: "How do I apply to participate in formal recruitment?"
A: You can download the recruitment application at www.uttyler.edu/greeklife . Once you have completed the form you can take it to the Office of Student life & leadership located downstairs in the
Q: Is there a registration fee and when is my application due?
A: All individuals submitting registration forms will be asked to pay a $20.00 registration fee that will cover snacks and drinks between recruitment rounds and will cover the cost of the t-shirt provided for you to wear during the first night of recruitment. (A $10.00 late fee will be added after Sept. 2nd) More information can be found at the UT Tyler Greek Life Website or by contacting the UT Tyler Greek Life Adviser, Brittany Temple, at 903-565-5645.
Q. I hear sororities are really expensive. How much would it cost me to be part of your chapter?
A: Sororities at larger schools are much more expensive than what they are at UT Tyler mainly because we do not have housing. As a new member in any sorority your first year always costs slightly more due to initiation fees, cost of your membership badge, and one time fees. In our chapter your dues will cover everything for the year including your badge, initiation fees, and lifetime membership to the Delta Gamma Anchora Magazine and sisterhood activities.
The cost for a new member for one academic school year in 2007-2008 was: $935.00
The cost of a second year member for one academic school year in 2007-2008 was: $676.00
For more information or to ask about payment options please email deltagamma_etaxi@hotmail.com . Delta Gamma does offer payment plans and encourages members to pay month to month. Monthly payments do vary.
Q. How much time will be devoted to the sorority?
A: This one is strictly up to the member. In our chapter we meet regularly once a week on Monday nights at 9:00pm. As a new member during your first 8 weeks you will attend an additional meeting starting at 7:00pm on Tuesdays with your pledge class and the new member educator.
As a new member or member we require that you attend all major sisterhoods (usually once a month with small events being optional such as lunch or dinners). These events are always a lot of fun and sisters don't usually want to miss them anyway! In addition, as a member you are required complete 5 hours of community service per semester. In addition, you must also participate in an extra curricular activity (Jobs do count). Community service events are pre-arranged by our foundation chair and take place with sisters! If you are interested viewing our chapter calendar before becoming a member feel free to talk with our chapter president Melissa Smith during recruitment or e-mail her at msmith2@patriots.uttyler.edu .
Q. What happens after I get a bid from Delta Gamma?
A. The Delta Gamma new member pursuit is designed to help our new members incorporate Delta Gamma into their lives. It consists of one additional mandatory meeting referred to as a new member meeting that will take place for the first eight consecutive weeks following bid day. Each new member meeting will consist of a brief educational lesson about Delta Gamma allowing new members to learn about the history, procedures, facts, values, and practices of Delta Gamma. At the end of the new member period each woman will be tested on her understanding of Delta Gamma prior to participating in the initiation ceremonies. The new member pursuit is designed to be a relaxed atmosphere so that new members can interact with other sisters in her pledge class and also older members of the chapter. The uplifting experience will help transition the new member into becoming a part of the sisterhood that she will belong to forever.
Following the eight week new member period members will continue to meet as a new member class as well with other new member classes of our chapter. Activities that our chapter participates in are: lunch in the UC, movie nights, Grey's Anatomy Watch Parties, girls nights, planned social events, attending campus activities and more! The sisterhood of Delta Gamma is life long and allows each member to mold her own experiences through the organization and develop the bonds of sisterhood.
